Memory of A Passover in the early 1960s
I received an email from Irwin Schreiner that got me to remember this.
The email is below:
I remember two things.
1.
Fritz (Fred) attended my bar mitzvah (in April 1963) and insisted on
standing when everybody else stood (e.g., for the amidah) even though
Herta told him he shouldn't do that.
2.
Fritz and Herta attended the Passover Sedar at our house on Caddington
Avenue sometimes. One year (I don't remember which year) I remember in
particular we had a pre Sedar family meeting on the issue of verse 9 of
psalm 113 (the first hymn of hallel). The verse promises that a childless
mother will give birth to children. My mother wanted to skip the psalm
entirely because she thought Herta would be offended. We decided to do
the verse in Hebrew without the translation figuring Herta wouldn't
notice. But in any case, my mother asked Herta to help in the kitchen
during the first part of the Hallel (which occurs before the meal) so I
guess we could have done the psalm in English anyway. I didn't watch
Fritz during this because I was concentrating on reading the Hebrew.

Hi Martin,
I would normally ask.. whats up? But your Weiss Chronicles already has the info.
I wanted to ask you... just for my curiosity.. if you have any memories/recollections
of Fred Bleicher.. Herta's husband? He died in 1963. You/we were kids, so perhaps there
wasn't much of a connection even though the Bleichers lived rather close to you.
I was researching some documents and photographs Herta had and discovered that Fred
(originally Fritz) spent time in Kitchener internment camp in England.
I have finished communicating with a relatively new web site in England that is gathering info on
those who were at Kitchener Camp .
There is not much recorded about their experiences, who they were, and what happened to them after
release. Some Kitchener records were lost. I emailed them jpgs of the docs/photos I had, and wrote
a short bio/tribute. It mentions Woodward and Lothrop and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Thought you
might be interested, since you knew Herta.

Another All Star Game in Washington years ago
Back in 1969, the All Star Game was scheduled for July 22 in RFK Stadium.
I had a ticket for the game courtesy of Dave Goldstein's father Ben.
Unfortunately, there was a monster rain storm that day. About 4" of rain fell in two or three hours.
They played the game on July 23 but I felt I had to go to work. In retrospect, I should have called in sick. Anyway, the NL won 9-3. The image shows Carl Yastrzemski leaping for a ball hit by Johnny Bench (it went over Carl for a HR).
I was reminded of this by an email from Irwin.
