Time Buffering before I knew what it was
My Father Was a Proponent of Time Buffering
When I was young and we were planning a trip, dad would start the planning by looking at our arrival time. He would then subtract the transit time and also subtract a long preparation time to get to our departure time.
He justified the preparation time by saying something like this,
"by the time we get our coats and hats together and make sure we have the car keys and our wallets and ...."
By the time Irwin and I were in our 20s, we sort of made fun of this saying,
"by the time we open the car door, and then close the car door and turn the ignition key...".
Anyway, in logistics, the trip preparation time as well as the time needed in case of unexpected traffic congestion is frequently called the 'buffer time'. It is part of the input in a proprietary computer program that I sometimes use and sometime market. The other day, I was explaining the 'buffer concept' for trips and I used the analogy of the coats, hats, keys and wallet for personnel trips (which by the way, we don't set a buffer for in our computer program).
The image is actually the chemical buffer process, in which weak acids and weak bases stay in the solution and offset strong acids or strong bases which would otherwise make the entire solution acetic or basic.
