Long Term Memories
More old pictures PJW and MHW and LLW
This image was in the same album as my Bar Mitzvah pictures. It shows Peter and Lillian in Rockefeller Square in New York City. I think it was taken in the 1960s
..............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................I think this was during our family visit to NYC during the World's Fair but I'm not sure.
This image was also in the same album as my Bar Mitzah pictures. It is me about the time of my birth in April 1950.

sort of smiling
Again an image from that album. It is of Peter. I estimate it was taken in the early 1930s.
................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. I really like the glasses. In the movie "Dr. Zivago, one of protagonists, Strelnikov, has similar glasses.
More pictures from the 1960s some bar mitzvah
For some reason I particularly liked to fool around in the back yard with golf instruments. The image is taken after the Bar Mitzvah celebration but I apparently am still wearing really nice clothes.
................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. I think the thin guy in the deep background is David Goldstein.

This image is a list of the presents I received at or about my Bar Mitzvah celebration.

I still have some of them. The book "Rome and Jerusalem" was somewhat famous at the time being a precusor of the work of Herzl. I read it a few years ago and realize some of the problematic parts of "Rome..". For example, it is calls all the different ethnicities of Europe as individual races.
Pictures from the 60s. M's bar mitzvah
First image is of Peter and Lillian and Irwin and Martin and George and Margaret (Peter's parents) and a bar mitzvah cake.
..............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................Pretty sure there was chocolate cake under the frosting or I wouldn't have looked happy.
This is letter, in French, I received from my great Uncle Bobby who lived in Belgium at the time of my bar mitzvah.
...............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

My grandmother Margaret is receiving a bunch of 'thanks' and 'congratulations' from her friends. As I recall people were impressed that I chanted the entire sedrah. However, the sedrah was 'Kedoshim' which is one of the shortest sedrahs. As I recall also the Rabbi made much of the many positive commandments in the sedrah e.g., 'love your neighbor as yourself'. However, I was a bit put off by some of the things in the sedrah e.g., 'don't lie with a man like you would lie with a woman' which I found 'icky' and 'don't pass your son through fire for Moloch' which seemed to me not needed since no one would do that and there was already the 'no gods before me' commandment. I eventually read the rest of the Hebrew bible and found that some of the Kings of Israel and Judah sort of did that (2 Kings 16:3)

oy

For some reason these Leagrams were available for people to send to kids for their bar mitzvah or I suppose for other reasons.

I got about a dozen of these. The one in the image is from the parents of Howard Foreman a friend with who I occasionally email.
Lots of Pictures of Tamar Elizabeth When She Was Little
This is Tamar Elizabeth at birth.
This is Tamar with her grandmother Kathleen Byers Lindsey and great grandmother Nell Byers.

Two Recent Deaths Bring Back Memories
In the past few days Al Kaline (top image) and Bobby Mitchell died.

Between Irwin and me the following memories came back.
Once at a
Sunday brunch involving my father's Bnai Brith Lodge, Bobby Mitchell, at
the time a star wide receiver for the Washington Redskins, was the
invited speaker. Both my father and I asked him questions after the
presentation.
Dad: To what do you attribute the growing popularity of professional football?
Mitchell: The Violence
Martin: The Redskins Team Profile says you are 5'11". Is that your real height? (he seemed only 5'9" or so)
Mitchell; That's my playing height.
After his death I read about Mitchell. He evidently enjoyed speaking at
community functions. People remembered him speaking to firemen, bowling
leagues, etc. Apparently he was a nice guy who liked getting out and
helping various communities and didn't charge much (maybe nothing) for
his time.
Once at dinner discussing an upcoming series where the Senators were playing Detroit,
Dad: What the Senators need is an acidic pitcher?
Irwin and I: What's that mean?
Dad: To neutralize Al Kaline.
This was also posted on the weiss chronology blog.
A 1964 World's Fair Memory Re-Tasted
In 1964, the World's Fair was in New York City.
Our family went to it.
I remember a few things about this.
1. There were a lot of tolls to pay on the drive to and from (there still are, although one may pay electronically).
2. There were some concept exhibits like 'house of the future', 'car of the future', 'phone of the future'.
3. There was
the Unisphere, which is still there in Flushing Meadows (it currently looks like
image one from the Wikipedia article on the Unisphere but used to look like the second image). The Unisphere has been used
in movies, e.g., "Men in Black".
4. It was
hot at the World's Fair and there was a drought in the North East that
year. When we went to a restaurant we had to order water or they
wouldn't bring it. Between meals we had something called "Italian
Ices".
I remember this all yesterday because I bought some Italian Ices (yes they are kosher and parve) per Beth's request.
I vaguely remember that back in 1964 they tasted OK but not spectacular. This year I think they were pretty good but not spectacular.
Irwin's Presentation at the 22 May 2019 Kitchener Meeting
Ann and I and Irwin and Ellen Weiss all attended an event in New York City on May 22, 2019.
This was a meeting of descendants of the Kitcheners.
The Kitcheners were male refugees from Germany and Austria (mostly) who were in a camp in southeast England in the late 1930s.
Ellen's father Herbert was one of them.
Herbert was a 2nd cousin of my father Peter.
Presentations were made at this event, one per refugee who had descendants attending.
Irwin made the presentation for Peter.
The first image is from Peter's paternal grandparents on an invitation to a wedding anniversary
Irwin made a point that at the bottom of this invitation they indicated 'no smoking'.
The second image is my grandparents (Peter's parents) George and Margaret on their 50th anniversary in 1967. Irwin pointed out that my grandfather frequently wore a tie where others would have been 'business casual'.
The third image is from Irwin and Cheryl's wedding. From left: me, Ann, my mother, Beth, my grandmother, my father, Cheryl and Irwin.
The fourth image is my father in 1943 in uniform.
The fifth image is a letter my Grandfather George received informing him to report for transit to a concentration camp (he didn't).
The sixth image is a better one of Peter in uniform.
The other images were from my home collection, some from Irwin's.
Memory of A Passover in the early 1960s
I received an email from Irwin Schreiner that got me to remember this.
The email is below:
I remember two things.
1.
Fritz (Fred) attended my bar mitzvah (in April 1963) and insisted on
standing when everybody else stood (e.g., for the amidah) even though
Herta told him he shouldn't do that.
2.
Fritz and Herta attended the Passover Sedar at our house on Caddington
Avenue sometimes. One year (I don't remember which year) I remember in
particular we had a pre Sedar family meeting on the issue of verse 9 of
psalm 113 (the first hymn of hallel). The verse promises that a childless
mother will give birth to children. My mother wanted to skip the psalm
entirely because she thought Herta would be offended. We decided to do
the verse in Hebrew without the translation figuring Herta wouldn't
notice. But in any case, my mother asked Herta to help in the kitchen
during the first part of the Hallel (which occurs before the meal) so I
guess we could have done the psalm in English anyway. I didn't watch
Fritz during this because I was concentrating on reading the Hebrew.

Hi Martin,
I would normally ask.. whats up? But your Weiss Chronicles already has the info.
I wanted to ask you... just for my curiosity.. if you have any memories/recollections
of Fred Bleicher.. Herta's husband? He died in 1963. You/we were kids, so perhaps there
wasn't much of a connection even though the Bleichers lived rather close to you.
I was researching some documents and photographs Herta had and discovered that Fred
(originally Fritz) spent time in Kitchener internment camp in England.
I have finished communicating with a relatively new web site in England that is gathering info on
those who were at Kitchener Camp .
There is not much recorded about their experiences, who they were, and what happened to them after
release. Some Kitchener records were lost. I emailed them jpgs of the docs/photos I had, and wrote
a short bio/tribute. It mentions Woodward and Lothrop and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Thought you
might be interested, since you knew Herta.

Another All Star Game in Washington years ago
Back in 1969, the All Star Game was scheduled for July 22 in RFK Stadium.
I had a ticket for the game courtesy of Dave Goldstein's father Ben.
Unfortunately, there was a monster rain storm that day. About 4" of rain fell in two or three hours.
They played the game on July 23 but I felt I had to go to work. In retrospect, I should have called in sick. Anyway, the NL won 9-3. The image shows Carl Yastrzemski leaping for a ball hit by Johnny Bench (it went over Carl for a HR).
I was reminded of this by an email from Irwin.
This car is really together man
Back in 1975, I was living in San Francisco. I was giving a guy a ride. He made the comment, "This car is really together, man."
I responded, "I certainly hope so."
What reminded me of this was a scene toward the end of episode 8 of season 2 of "The Man in the High Castle" (I'm watching the series with George). The scene is in San Francisco and a man indicates that he fell in love with his wife because she was 'so together'.
