Moldy Bread Remembered

Back when we were first married in the 70s, we had a breadbox. It was plastic and the bread we put in it got moldy quickly.

It seemed to me that the breadbox was a truly idiotic invention.

I did some reading on this issue. Here are some concepts I didn't think through at the time:

1. Heat and too much moisture are the two big mold producers.

2. We kept the bread box on top of the refrigerator. This was a relatively warm place.

3. Our plastic bread box didn't let moisture out. Apparently there were some breadboxes that let some moisture out but not too much. Like in the image, these were made of wood or ceramic.

I thought of this today because some of the bread purchased on Friday (not by me) for the suddah sheleesheet was already moldy by today.

  Buying German Products

One item that came up from time to time in our family conversation back in the 1960s and 70s was whether a Jew should buy German products or how much effort should one take to avoid buying such products.

It was obviously a conversation that came up in other households. A few years ago, I noticed that there were some Mercedes Benz vehicles in our synagogue parking lot.

The combination of a lessening of the inhibition against such buying, the increase of wealth and the fact that some Mercedes Benz vehicle parts are made in the US probably accounts for the appearance of such vehicles.

I thought of this today because, in today's mail, my father received a $1500 certificate toward the purchase or lease on any 2010 or 2011 Mercedes Benz.

PS: Early in 2018, I was Mashgiach at a Jewish National Fund event at a Audi Dealership in Owing Mill Maryland (I think the owner was a major donor).
Martin's memories preceding the chronicles, i.e., before 1986. The reason for this blog is to capture old memories that come back to me at seemingly random times. Thus the entries will not be in chronological order. Also, the accuracy of this blog is less than the accuracy in the more contemporaneous blog http://weisschronicles.blogspot.com/
