This Year's Cherry Blossoms Remind Me.
One year, I think it was in the early 1960s, my father bundled us into the car and we drove down to the tidal basin to see the Cherry Blossoms.
He told us several times how lucky we were to live so close to this scene as people come from all over the world to see the blossoms.
Of course he was correct that people come from all over the world. I've been to the basin many times since and heard dozens of languages being spoken and people with expensive cameras taking all kinds of pictures.
Yes the blossoms are nice (these images come from today's on line Washington Times). However, there are now cherry trees all over the place; there are many on our street and a street nearby, Tildenwood, has rows on both sides of the street. I've never heard foreign languages spoken by people taking pictures of those trees and, although there is no pool of water and no Jefferson Monument and no Washington Monument, I prefer our local trees.
As a matter of fact, the scale of the trees at the tidal basin would be way better if the Tidal Basin were smaller (or there were a series of 10 of them).
