  A Snowstorm Memory form 1958

Today (Feb 15) is the 50th anniversary of a major Washington DC snowstorm (I was reminded of this by Stanley Cohen). However, another one later that year is the one I remember more. The snowstorm was March 19-20 and put down about at least a half foot of wet heavy snow.

During school that year we were "studying" the months and our teacher had all of us bring in pictures of spring. The students brought endless pages from magazines and newspapers with flowers, flowering bushes, etc. Apparently the teacher had been reading some advice that the students should get to see flowers, etc. outside. However, the outside was covered with a heavy blanket of snow. As I recall, she was pretty apologetic about this - her lesson plan having been ruined by the weather.

In the more recent past (since about 2000), I have been planting both late spring bloomers (e.g. lilies, tulips) as well as early blooming plants (crocus, daffodils). The crocuses are early enough to poke through and show their flowers even with a light (say 2" or less) snow.  6:05 AM

  Giggy Gadgets

I used the term "giggy gadgets" tonight. It was during a class on Maimonides (his theory of prophesy). I was trying to explain the process of what the medival philosophers called the imaginative facility.

The term 'giggy gadget" was one that my mother used a lot. Earlier this week (actually yesterday) was her yarzeit (anniversary of her burial according to the Jewish calendar).  7:09 PM
