  FHWA memory # 37 (out of order) An Xmas Story

Back in about 1983, I was administering an odd ball grant program that was for public transit for non metropolitan areas (under section 18 of title 49 USC). It was the day before Xmas. Two days earlier we had approved a grant to the city of Galesburg (known as the home of Carl Sandberg). I received a call from the Galesburg newspaper. They were somewhat surprised that the Federal government was open - in truth we were short staffed that day - . They asked whether the Galeburg grant had been approved (in those days we didn't have to clear every news call with our public affairs people like we do now).

I answered, "Yup. Two days ago."

"Fine." said the reporter, "How much did Galesburg get?"

I didn't have the documents in front of me because I had sent them to files. So I said, "I don't remember the exact number but we gave them every cent they asked for".

The next day in the Galeburg paper the lead article was entitled, "Xmas present to City" and subtitled, "Feds: We gave them every cent they asked for". In the body of the article my name was quoted.

I spoke to someone from Galesburg who told me that if I ever wanted to run for public office in Galesburg, I would be elected easily (he was mostly kidding I assumed).
