A Presidential debate memory
I haven't watched the Presidential debates live in at least 25 years, nor seen a State of the Union address live, nor a Presidential news conference live, nor watched the nominating conventions live. I don't consider this activity to be worth much. If anyone says anything worth much a verbatim transcript will be available. Besides, what people say is frequently much different from what they will do.
I recall I was visiting Madison, Wisc in 1976 or 1980 and was visiting with Bill Folz. We were on our way to the Union to get some beer. Someone asked why we weren't watching the debates and say, "aren't you interested in what they have to say?'. I recall saying, "nope."
Old faces
Ann and I were at a funeral yesterday. Someone there asked me if I was named Joel and a friend of Irwin Weiss. It turned out to be Rabbi Isaac Brandriss (who mixed me up with Joel Greenhouse who doesn't look like me at all but hey so what). Also there was Mark Olkan. I knew both of them back in the 1960s. Isaac was the son of the Rabbi of our congregation; Mark was the son of the Cantor.
