Cicada outbreaks of the Past
We have a cicada outbreak this month. The cicada event I remember the best was in 1970. Irwin and I were driving somewhere, I think it was on the Beltway, and a swarm of cicadas came toward the car and crashed into the window. We both reflexively braced for the impact. Of course since cicadas have somewhat hollow bodies, there was no impact. The cicadas just bounced off the car window and that was that.
Less vs. Fewer
My father had a 'favorite' mistake in English. This was when people used the word 'less' when they meant 'fewer' (fewer is used for countables, e.g., fewer calories, otherwise less is used, e.g., less fattening). A week or so ago I corrected a very prominent attorney on this. I was reminded of this when I purchased something which advertised itself as having 'Less Carbs'. I think you can count carbs but I'm not entirely sure.
